Its never been more important to protect your home and property from intruders. Statistics show that home break-ins and property crimes are increasing at an alarming rate. In the United States, a home burglary takes place every 12 to 15 seconds; but what can we do to protect ourselves? Consider a four-legged alarm system!

Pets are wonderful for companionship, but they are also very useful for protection.

There are breeds that are not only great family dogs, but also great protection dogs. Here are a few dog breeds to consider if you are wanting the best of both worlds.

The German Shepherd

The German shepherd is a breed specifically bred for protection. Their large build barks protection! Their strong instinct to protect is perfect for a situation that involves any intruders, but their sweet loyalty is perfect for companionship and respect to its family. Since Germans shepherds are very intelligent, training them at a young age to be loyal yet loving will be no hard task.

The Doberman Pinscher

Many people believe Doberman pinschers to be a very mean breed, but that is not the case. Doberman Pinschers can be extremely loving and loyal to its owners – that is why they are perfect for protection. Doberman pinschers are known to follow their owners everywhere, simply out of their sweetness of loyalty and respect. They are extremely intelligent, and are very trainable to behave and to protect. Doberman pinschers will not tolerate any strangers, and will always protect their family. Just be sure to familiarize your dog to any family or friends so that if someone shows up, the Pinscher’s recognition of the visitor’s scent will keep him from being defensive and dangerous.

The Bullmastiff

These dogs are incredibly huge, so their look alone would deter from any intruders wanting to waltz onto your front porch. Bullmastiff is a strong, independent breed that makes a great guard dog. Bullmastiffs are loyal and loving to their “pack”, and the most affectionate pet with his loved ones, but can be quite aloof and suspicious toward strangers and unknown people. They will be suspicious towards strangers and may act aggressively toward people outside the family. Training and guidance is important throughout every stage of their lives.

The Rottweiler

Rottweilers are generally thought to be a mean breed, but they are very loving and loyal to their owners. Their stronger build and appearance can no doubt intimidate strangers. Rottweilers are hesitant and protective around strangers, so they are good to have as protection. This breed is both good for affection and guarding when trained.

Boxer Dog

Boxers are loyal, intelligent, and alert, and thus are fairly easy to train. With a stalwart appearance, the boxer can deter most criminals from trespassing on your property. They’re also very good with children, so aside from being one of the best protection dogs, they make a great family pet as well. They’re also very good with children, so aside from being one of the best protection dogs, they make a great family pet as well.
